Materials

  • Wood Elements: Shelving and accent surfaces feature solid wood treated with the Shou Sugi Ban (Yakisugi) technique, a traditional Japanese method that involves controlled charring of the wood’s surface. This imparts a deep black color, highlights the grain, and increases resistance to water, insects, and fire—a durable and visually striking choice.

  • Resin Accent: A neon orange resin ‘river’ is set along one edge, created using poured epoxy resin. This complements and matches the store’s vibrant color tones, adding a bold artistic accent.

  • Wheels: Heavy-duty caster wheels fitted to the base ensure ease of mobility within the retail environment.

Structural Design

  • Minimalist Geometry: The rack’s silhouette emphasizes straight, streamlined lines for uncluttered functionality and an elegant, gallery-like presentation. Open spaces and modern proportions allow the wood’s grain and finishes to stand out.

  • Integrated Storage: Shelves and crossbars provide not just display space, but structural stability. The resin river is integrated seamlessly, reinforcing the shelf and adding visual interest.

  • Mobility: The rack stands on sturdy wheels, supporting frequent repositioning without compromising stability.

Innovative Techniques

  • Shou Sugi Ban Treatment:

    • Wood boards are carefully charred using a torch or traditional Japanese flue method.

    • The charred surface is brushed to remove loose soot and reveal the textured grain, followed by sealing with natural oil. This not only enhances aesthetics but greatly boosts the wood’s longevity.

  • Resin River Pour:

    • A channel is carved along the selected wood edge.

    • Neon orange resin is poured into the groove and cured, leaving a vivid and glass-like accent that is both structural and decorative.

  • Store Customisation: The rack’s form and color palette were specifically chosen to complement the store’s overall interior design and to attract collaborating fashion designers.

Conclusion

The result is a clothing rack that not only offers functionality (ample display, mobility) but also serves as a statement piece marrying Japanese craftsmanship, artful resin work, and modern materials. Its bold, unconventional style reflects both the brand’s ethos and the collaborative nature of the retail space
